What to Pack for a Dog-Friendly Cape Town Road Trip

The best thing about road trips with your dog is that they are almost always better than you expect. The second best thing is that preparation is simple. You need less than you think, but the things you actually need matter.

The essentials

Water is the top priority. More than you think you will need. On hot days, dogs drink a lot and water availability on remote trails is unreliable. A collapsible bowl takes up almost no space and means you are not trying to get your dog to drink from a bottle.

Poop bags. Obvious but worth stating because running out on a trail with no bin for three kilometres is a specific kind of frustration. Take twice as many as you think you need.

A lead you trust. For road trips specifically, choose the lead you would use near traffic or unpredictable terrain. Not the lightweight one you use for the promenade. If you are stopping at unfamiliar spots, a solid harness and a lead with a proper metal clip is the right call.

Comfort in the car

Most dogs travel better with a familiar blanket or mat in the boot. It smells like home and gives them a defined space to settle. If your dog gets car sick, a shorter meal window before the drive helps. Fresh air through a slightly open window is better than aircon for most dogs on longer trips.

For the stops

A small first aid kit is worth throwing in for longer trips. Include wound wash, a bandage, and tweezers for thorns and ticks. Cape Town's fynbos areas have both.

What to leave behind

Heavy bowls, big bags of food, unnecessary toys. Keep the boot manageable. A road trip with a dog does not need to feel like moving house.

Final woof: A good road trip with a dog is mostly water, a clean harness, and enough bags. Everything else is optional.
