Cape Town's Best Dog-Friendly Markets

Cape Town's market scene is genuinely excellent, and dogs are welcome at more of them than you might think. Here are the ones where taking your dog is actually a good idea rather than a logistical challenge.

Oranjezicht City Farm Market, Granger Bay

The Saturday market at the V&A waterfront is one of the best food markets in the city. Dogs are welcome on the outdoor sections. It gets busy from mid-morning, so arrive early if your dog is on the cautious side with crowds. The views across the harbour are excellent and there is usually a breeze off the water.

Hout Bay Harbour Market

Sunday mornings at Hout Bay Harbour are excellent for dogs. Outdoor, relaxed, and surrounded by the kind of smells that make for an extremely engaged dog. The space is large enough that you can move away from crowds easily. Worth pairing with a Hout Bay beach walk before or after.

Bay Harbour Market, Hout Bay

Different to the harbour market and worth visiting separately. Friday evenings and weekends. The outside sections are dog-friendly, it is less frantic than some city markets, and the food options are good enough to make a full evening of it.

Greenmarket Square

The permanent open-air market in the city bowl is worth knowing for Saturday mornings. Dogs are allowed and it is a good socialisation environment for dogs who need exposure to city noise and people.

Tokai Forest Farmers Market

A smaller, quieter option that suits dogs who are not yet comfortable with large crowds. The market is outside, relaxed, and the forest surroundings mean you can take a walk before or after without going anywhere else. More local, less tourist, which tends to mean more dogs.

Final woof: Cape Town's market culture is one of its better weekend offerings. Most of the good ones are outside and relaxed enough to take a well-socialised dog along without it being stressful for anyone.
