How We Turn Plastic Bottles Into Dog Collars

People often ask us how recycled plastic bottles become dog collars. It is a reasonable question. Here is the actual process, from bottle to product.

Collection

Post-consumer plastic bottles (the kind you drink water or soft drinks from) are collected, sorted, and cleaned. These are bottles that have already been used and would otherwise go to landfill. The collection process is the first step in giving this material a second purpose.

Processing into fibre

The cleaned bottles are shredded into small flakes, then melted and extruded into fine polyester filaments. These filaments are spun into yarn that has similar properties to virgin polyester but uses existing plastic instead of new petroleum. The resulting material is called RPET, recycled polyethylene terephthalate.

Weaving into webbing

The RPET yarn is woven into the webbing that becomes your dog's collar, harness strap, or leash. The weaving process determines the strength, flexibility, and feel of the final product. We specify the width, thickness, and weave pattern to make sure the webbing is strong enough for daily use while staying soft against a dog's skin.

Assembly and quality control

The webbing is cut to size, fitted with hardware (buckles, D-rings, clips), and stitched together. Every piece is checked for stitching quality, hardware function, and overall finish before it ships.

What this means in numbers

Each Fetch collar uses approximately 3 to 5 recycled plastic bottles worth of RPET material. A full combo set (collar, harness, and leash) uses approximately 12 to 15 bottles. That is plastic diverted from landfill, turned into something functional that lasts for years.

Why it matters

We chose RPET because the environmental logic is straightforward. Using existing waste instead of virgin materials reduces the footprint of every product we make. It is not a perfect system, but it is measurably better than the alternatives. And the resulting material is durable, machine washable, and holds up in the conditions our customers actually use it in.
