5 Signs Your Dog's Collar Does Not Fit Properly

Most collars leave the shop looking fine and gradually drift into a bad fit without anyone noticing. Your dog cannot tell you when something is rubbing or sitting wrong. Here are five signs it is time to re-measure and readjust.

1. You can see a line in the fur

If the collar has been on for a while and you can see a compressed stripe in the fur underneath it, the collar is probably sitting too tight. Pull it forward slightly after a walk and see whether the fur underneath has been flattened. It should sit freely on the neck, not press into it.

2. Your dog scratches at it constantly

Dogs scratch collars occasionally, especially when they are new. But if your dog is working at the collar repeatedly across different times of day, something is off. It might be the material, the width, the positioning, or the tightness. Take it off and check the skin underneath for any redness.

3. It slips over the head easily

Too loose is as much of a problem as too tight. If you can pull the collar forward over your dog's ears without unclipping it, the collar is too loose to be safe. Dogs who pull hard, reverse suddenly, or are easily spooked can slip out of a collar in a second. The two finger rule exists for a reason. You should be able to fit two fingers underneath, not your whole hand.

4. The tag jingles constantly

A collar with a tag that never stops moving is usually sitting too loose and moving around too much. It is a small sign but a reliable one. Check the fit and also make sure the tag is attached with a solid split ring rather than an S-hook, which opens over time.

5. It has not been checked since your dog was a puppy

Dogs' necks change as they grow, gain weight, lose weight, or get older. A collar fitted six months ago may not be right today. If you have not checked it recently, take it off and measure again. Young dogs especially can outgrow a collar quickly, and the difference between a correct fit and a tight one is not always obvious until you actually measure.

Final woof: Collar fit is one of those things that is easy to overlook because the collar is always there. A quick check every few weeks takes thirty seconds and makes a real difference to your dog's comfort.
